McDonough First United Methodist Church
May 11, 2003 - An Historic Date for Our Church
This is a Sunday morning that will be remembered by our members for years to come. This is not only the day that we received seventeen members at the same service, this is the day that the church family took a leap of faith to expand the ministries of the church in a most exciting way. Less than two years ago, seeing the need to expand the reach of the United Methodist Church in Henry County, McDonough First United Methodist Church sponsored a mission church. Members from our church, seeking to expand the reach of the church, formed this new mission church. They were supported by the congregation with the donation of ten acres of land, and seed money to help them get started. Wesley Way United Methodist Church is now operating in their first new building, and God is blessing their work. And, McDonough First United Methodist Church continues to grow.
Representatives of McDonough First United Methodist Church recently entered into negotiations to purchase properties adjacent to the church. An offer was made, and a sale was agreed on. A preliminary plan was drawn up showing how we could expand into the existing building next door and improve the outside to fit with the existing buildings. The capital stewardship committee was authorized to start a fund drive and to look into how we might fund the project.
On this historic date, the Church Conference was called. The Sanctuary was filled, and the committees involved presented plans on the expansion of our property. This expansion will include many new Sunday School Classrooms, a gymnasium set up for multi-use, and many additional parking places. A motion was made to start our expansion and seek funding as presented by the combined Building Committee, Capital Stewardship Committee, and with the approval of the Administrative Board. The motion was seconded, and the question was called. The vote was in favor, and the vote was unanimous. God's people are all in one accord.

We will be starting with the expansion of our existing fellowship hall. This project will double the seating capacity of our fellowship hall, build a new kitchen, and build a covered walkway and covered drop off point in the back parking lot. This should be completed in the fall of 2003. We are making room for a growing community to find a church home. We are making a place for you.
