The Wesley Community Centers
Each year hundreds of United Methodists from all over the North Georgia Conference travel to the Stone Mountain United Methodist Church as their starting point on an 8-Mile walk around the base of Stone Mountain. The purpose of this trek is to raise money for the Wesley Community Centers. Each "walker" collects donations for his of her efforts at walking the entire distance to help the life of someone else. The Wesley Community includes Camp Wesley, a summer camp for inner city youth; Wesley Woods, an assisted living and care center for the elderly; and other homes and camps for persons in need. Each year our "walkers" consistently raise enough donations to keep us in the top of the Griffin District. For year 2000 we were recognized by the Wesley Community Centers for having the highest donations in our district.
Haven House
We are so pleased to be a part
of "Haven House." Through the work of the Flint Circuit Council
on Family Violence, Haven House was established as a safe house for victims of
domestic violence. Haven House offers emergency housing for women experiencing violence in their home, and wanting out. Haven House helps
with temporary housing, transportation, job training, placement, and
counseling. The house is set up to temporarily house women and their
children. The Flint Circuit Council on Family Violence also helps men who
are victims of domestic violence by giving them legal advocacy, counseling, and
finding motel rooms for them since there is no shelter Henry County for men
victims, and the Atlanta shelters are too far. Since its opening, Haven House has
ministered to too many women and children in our community, but manages to
always have room in an emergency.
If you are living in an abusive situation please call 1-800-33HAVEN.

If you are concerned about someone who might be in an abusive situation, please give them the number (1-800-33HAVEN) and ask them to call. Regardless of where they are located, 1-800-33HAVEN will connect them to the closest safe house in their area.

A Friend's House
A Friend's House is a safe house for children that have to be removed from their homes for whatever reason. A Friend's House offers temporary housing for children needing to go into foster care. Children can be placed at A Friend's House at any hour, allowing case workers a window of time to find proper foster care. When a child has to be taken from the home, he or she can say that they are going to be staying at a friend's house and save any possible embarrassment.
Red Bird Mission

Red Bird school in Beverly, Ky., is part of the Red Bird Mission, founded in 1921, as an educational center, but now includes a dental clinic, a medical center, Senior housing, a Senior Citizens Center, and a community library among many other programs and services. The General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) has supported the mission of Red Bird through its National Mission Institutions program, a nation-wide caring connection that serves, nurtures and empowers the marginalized, especially women and children, in towns, cities, and rural areas like the coal-mining community of Beverly. The aim of Red Bird Mission is to minister to whole persons in the name of Christ and help them fulfill their potential.

In His Name Food Pantry

The In His Name Food Pantry is a local food pantry where those in need of a little help can pick up some healthy food for their families. This particular mission project has been taken up by The Preschool as a school mission project also. Our United Methodist Men help the food pantry on a monthly basis, both helping with food distribution and the UMM Hamburg Ministry. The men go to the food pantry each month and cook a hot meal for all of the clients that are being served by the food pantry.

Samaritans Together
Samaritans Together was born out of dream from one of our members several years ago. It is a clearing house for helping people in our community with emergency assistance on rent, food, utilities, or medicine. Now supported by many churches in Henry County, Samaritans Together can provide for emergency needs for anyone that may have too much month at the end of the money. Samaritans Together can help directly by providing money to pay for a prescription, or help with rent or utilities in time of crisis. Samaritans Together can help with negotiating payments, so that utility services will continue uninterrupted. Samaritans Together can also direct someone in need to the Food Pantry, or the Clothes Closet. These services are provided on a case-by-case basis. Samaritans Together does not give out money, but pays directly for the person in need. Samaritans Together does not provide any on-going or permanent assistance.
